Background:

I have taught for 28 years in three different school districts. My first 10 years were spent in Plano, where I attended high school. I began teaching sixth grade and then spent the next nine years teaching gifted education, English, speech, theatre, history, and debate in grades 6-12. Then I moved to San Antonio where I taught for five years in North East ISD. While there, I initiated the World Studies program and served as the Director of Forensics. When I moved back to the metroplex, I began teaching at Grapevine HS where I continued with the World Studies program and served as the co-director of debate. I was excited to be a part of the opening of Colleyville Heritage High School 12 years ago and established our nationally recognized debate program while continuing to teach World Studies. I resigned my position as Director of Debate three years ago in order to spend more time with my family and concentrate on my World Studies program.

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy has been shaped by three beliefs. The first is that I believe all of my students are people who deserve my respect and consideration. The second is that I believe that my job is to help each student find his way through his own strengths, much as the great Renaissance artist Michelangelo believed that he was merely releasing a statue from its marble encasement. Finally, since the birth of my own child and the adoption of a wonderful little boy, I have come to view my students as “other people’s babies,” a view which has influenced the way I see them. The precious people I work with in my classroom are the most important people in the world to someone - I feel a great responsibility to treat them with great care. An adage I adopted long ago continues to motivate me today, “A teacher is a person who meets a child where he is at, looks at where he has been, and then takes him forward.” I am a devout believer in lifelong learning and my motto is “cultural literacy.” For me, teaching is a calling.

Personal Statement:

I am married to the best debate coach in the nation, Aaron Timmons (he teaches at Greenhill School) and I am the mother of the two most wonderful boys in the world: Michael, who will be in the tenth grade this year, and Joshua, who is five. My free time (which is not much as the working mother of a teenager and preschooler) is spent reading, traveling, and enjoying my neighborhood. I am on the Board of Directors of my HOA. I even like working in my yard! I enjoy creative writing as well. My faith is very important to me and I am constantly working to balance the competing claims on my time while keeping my priorities straight. Keep me in your prayers!
