CHHS DEBATEA WINNING TRADITION WITH A HISTORY! Counselors will soon be coming to visit your school to discuss all of the opportunities that Colleyville Heritage has to offer. If you are a student with academic talent, then perhaps an association with Colleyville Heritage Debate will add an unparalleled dimension to their growth as a scholar and person. Schedule selections reflect some of the most important decisions that you will be making in the next few years. The greater the challenge, the larger the propensity for success. When making this choice, we hope that you will consider the exciting and challenging world of high school speech and debate. Association with the debate team will make you part of one of the nation’s best debate programs. In the past twelve years alone, CHHS Debate has won a state championship and been a finalist in Cross-Examination Debate and has won numerous awards in local and regional tournaments including UIL district championships in every speech/debate event. We began a tradition of national prominence twelve years ago and have continued that through the years as the team won awards at a number of major tournaments including: Greenhill Classic, St Mark’s School of Texas, Valley HS in Iowa, the Glenbrooks in Chicago, the Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University, Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, and the University of Berkeley in California. We have had numerous students receive University of Kentucky Tournament of Champion bids in Lincoln-Douglas Debate as well as Cross-Examination Debate. We have placed both 3rd and 10th at the NFL National Tournament. We have also competed in and won several national Round Robins. We have traveled all over the country and have debated on such prestigious campuses as Harvard, Emory, Stanford, Berkeley, Northwestern, UT and the University of Kentucky. Most of the students who have participated in debate at CHHS can claim incredible success at the university level. Former debaters attend or have graduated from Harvard, Harvard Law, MIT, NYU, Georgetown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory, UC Berkeley, Rice, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, SMU, UT-Plan2, UT Law, ACU and Florida State. Many of these students attend with academic scholarships in large part attributed to debate. Some of our students have even gone on to compete in debate in college, including one member of this past year’s National Debate Tournament college champions from Emory University. Debate is more than an argumentation class in high school. It is an opportunity to develop social skills, speaking skills, research and writing skills, critical and analytical thinking and creative problem solving, all of which help to acquire a philosophical and political worldview that surpasses a baseline high school experience. Our graduates tell us that professors at the University level notice a difference in their writing and speaking ability from other students. Even if debate doesn’t become a four year high school commitment, students with even one year of debate experience benefit from the skills acquired. Unlike other activities even a beginner can have great success and can earn an opportunity to go to any tournament. Our first year debaters get an opportunity to visit and compete in Atlanta, Georgia. If you truly aspire to higher levels of learning, would like to hear jazz in New Orleans, see a Monet in Chicago or the ocean in California and make friends from across the nation, talk to one of our debaters or call the debate office. It could be the most important academic commitment you will ever make.
