Who can join NHS?
Membership in the National Honor Society at CHHS is both a privilege and a recognition of high
achievement in academics, leadership, character and service. The Castle Chapter is open to
students entering their senior year. Previous membership in the National Junior Honor Society
is not required.
When can I apply?
There are two windows open for the application process. The first window is February of the
student's junior year. The second window is September of the student's senior year. Most
students apply their junior year. If not accepted in the first application cycle a student may
reapply in the second.
How do I apply?
Seniors who have at least a 4.25 grade point average and who are not currently members of NHS
are invited to apply. Click here to
download an application form.
What are the requirements?
In order to apply for membership the student must have at least a 4.25 grade point average and
at least fifteen verifiable community service hours during the previous twelve months. In
addition, the student must demonstrate exemplary character and leadership by teacher and
administrative recommendations. After students submit their applications by the appropriate
deadlines, a five-member Faculty Council conducts a blind review and votes to accept or deny
the application. Students are then notified of their membership status. Decisions of the
Faculty Council are final. Students applying in September of their senior year are notified of
their status in time to complete early decision applications for college. New members are
recognized in a formal induction ceremony (held in April for spring inductees and October for
fall inductees). New officers are elected in May for the following year.
Members must complete forty community service hours, maintain their grade point average,
maintain standards of character and leadership, and attend scheduled meetings in order to be
recognized at graduation with the NHS honor stole.
