Research: Endangered Species - 2004
I. Classification: Common Name and Scientific Name A. Taxonomy: Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. B. Relatives: List 2 other animals in the same “family” and where they are found
II. Biome:
Where does it live?(geographically and name biome) A. Abiotic characteristics of the biome in which is lives – MAP ____ 1. geology (describe terrain) ____ 2. meteorology (climate i.e. temperatures, rainfall, etc. data for months, seasons, years) ____ 3. hydrology (main large water source of the area animal is found ) ____ 4. agronomy (soil type description)
B.
Biotic characteristics ____1. producers (climax vegetation and typical producers of ecosystem of animal) ____2. consumers (primary, secondary and tertiary ) ____3. decomposers and scavengers (bacteria, fungus, detritovores) III. Habitat: Describe
each characteristic of the species’ typical “home” _____ A. Food (main diet, seasonal
changes, etc) _____ B. Water (main water source..
i.e. rivers, intermittent streams, etc) _____ C. Shelter (describe its lair or
den if applicable, or where it hides) _____ D. Space (What is its “range”
or carrying capacity)
IV. Niche: ____A. FOOD WEB of
ecosystem of animal, use the organisms listed above in IIB
____B. Identify NICHE: What is its job in the food chain
____C. Impact:
What populations does its presence or absence effect? Explain Briefly V. Populations: PROVIDE MAPS that show ranges over time. _____A. History (dates, #s, ranges, sightings) _____B. Present (most recent data)
_____C. Future (predictions) VI. Adaptations: How
has it adapted or NOT adapted to its environment (which may be why it is
on the endangered list) VII. Trophic Level:
Where does it fit in a food chain/web?
____ A. Draw
a typical food web for the biome including your species. Use the
organisms listed
in IIB to make the web. VIII. Life Cycle: What is
its biological cycle? _____A. mating/fertilization ritual and/or frequency
_____B. gestation period (how long is it pregnant and how many
young does it have) _____C. life expectancy IX. Economic Value: What
is the economic value and/or impact of this species to the area it inhabits? X. Conservation Issues _____A. When was it listed as endangered and/or threatened?
_____B. What are the major causes for endangerment? (these are
the most prevalent limiting
factors for the species... be specific and thoroughly explain)
_____C. Why should it be preserved? (refer to your book and
other sources) _____D. What programs of preservation have been in effect in the past that protect the animal and
what are the guidelines for it (i.e. find out the specifics on
preservation and what is being
done... Endangered Species Act is a good beginning)
XI. Reflection: How
has the publics’ knowledge of the species changed over time? XII. Reference Page: list ALL references used during research no matter how trivial.
Requirements:
1. List all internet references (copy any webpage address to
reference page)
2. BONUS for newspaper article(s) and Magazine article(s): Copies
must be
provided and information
needs to be included in the paper and
presentation
3. BONUS for using the School Database (site references) Presentation (2 major grades) 1. Written Portion Turn in one of these sheets filled out (typed, delete everything but the BOLD typed outline) add your information. Use normal fonts, normal size i.e. Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, no larger than 14 for information. You may be creative with the Outline
portion. 2. Visual and Oral
Portion
a. PowerPoint, Web Page, or Poster board (see teacher)
see list below for hat is required on the visual presentation
orally
b. Time: 3- 5 Minutes.... the facts!
c. ALL group members must participate Visual/Oral
Presentation Requirements ONLY the following needs to
be presented 1. Common and
Scientific Name (I.) 2. Picture and brief
physical description 3. Name Biome and
briefly describe habitat (II.) Any interesting facts about the species needs to be mentioned
here. 4. Maps of Ranges: (V.) past, present,
future 5. Chart of Graph with
population fluctuations over the years. 6. Food Web of Biome
including endangered species (explain typical food
chain) 7. Conservation Issues: ALL of X A.B.C. & D. answered and TYPED
on the presentation and EXPLAINED in the presentation. This is
the MEAT of your presentation, you must know this stuff!!! 8. Solution (XI) in conclusion form. Typed outline of program that YOU design. |
